Set in rural West Wales, The Gift of Weaving centres on a woman's journey to revision her life.
Alice Penrose is a gardener and a witch living a comfortable if somewhat solitary existence following the tragic death of her best friend. Alice is suffering the guilt of the survivor. Prolonged grief means she has lost her connection to the Goddess that has sustained her for most of her adult life. She has isolated herself from all but the most essential connection to her job at a local plant nursery.
But Alice's life is about to alter beyond her wildest expectations. Following a seemingly random encounter with an old woman on a beach, she embarks upon a magical quest toward recovery and healing.
Although magic is the central theme of the story, The Gift of Weaving is a realistic portrayal of the practice of ethical Goddess magic as enacted by vast numbers of women in the modern world whose spirituality is linked to eco-feminist politics. Women like Alice, whose comparatively commonplace lives run parallel with their magical ones encompassing marriage, children, career, divorce, sexuality, loss, survival and magic.
